UNESCO Global Geopark

Tumbler Ridge, BC

The area surrounding Tumbler Ridge in northeastern B.C., Canada is ideal for the outdoor recreation fan. From short walks in the woods to challenging backpacking trips through remote wilderness, there is a wide variety of four season activities. The Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society is the local outdoors club, and we promote non-motorized outdoor recreation of all kinds.

Tumbler Ridge is now the home of the Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark, which was the second Global Geopark in North America.  A Global Geopark is a unified area with geological heritage of international significance.  The WNMS is proud to be one of the anchor organizations of the Global Geopark, along with the Tumbler Ridge Museum Foundation.  WNMS trails and routes lead to a wide variety of geosites which display the unique and spectacular geology of the area.

Our Initiatives

Our initiatives help more than just trails

Windfall Lake Campground

One of the biggest projects in the recent history of the  WNMS was the building of the Windfall Lake Campground. The campground features several tent pads, an outdoor toilet, a bear cache and well-maintained trails. This stunning lake and surrounding mountains has become one of the most popular day and overnight hiking destinations near Tumbler Ridge. The construction of additional tent pads is  planned for 2024.

Murray Canyon Overlook Trail Re-route

In 2022, the BC Government notified the WNMS that the gravel pit near the Murray Canyon Overlook trail would be fenced and gated. This meant that the Overlook trailhead would no longer be accessible. A group of WNMS volunteers spent a few days designing and building a new trail to access the Overlook, which follows much of the original trail and includes a new trailhead at a pullout along the highway.

Babcock Falls Boardwalks Project

A definite "must-see" and easy destination near Tumbler Ridge is Babcock Falls which is often combined with a visit to the Boulder Gardens and/or the Shipyard Titanic. This trail has become one of the most well-used routes around and as it passes through some wetlands, the trail requires the use of boardwalks to safely navigate the soft and often muddy sections and minimize negative environmental affects. In October 2023, a team of 10 volunteers spent several days designing, building and installing new boardwalks to replace and add to the existing network of boardwalks.
